Finding Alternative Products (#1372)

Steve Hannaford has answered my call for alternatives to HP laser printers. Steve writes the increasingly popular Oligopoly Watch weblog, but in his day job he is an editor for Better Buys for Business, the best source of comparative data if you're looking to purchase new office equipment.

For anyone who's interested I settled on the Brother HL-6050DN, a Better Buys Editor's Choice. This little workgroup laser printer has more features than the "other" printer I was considering and sells for several hundred dollars less.

The guides, ranging in price from $30 to $40, are overkill if you just want an inexpensive desktop printer. But if you're looking to purchase some new office equipment -- printer, fax, copier, scanner, multi-function, etc. -- you'll be well served to spend a few bucks on the appropriate Better Buys guide before you make your choice. Such guides are often the only way to find high quality, but much less popular, alternatives to the mainstream offerings of the megacorps. Highly recommended.
