Fujitsu ScanSnap (#1572)

I'm a productivity gadget guy. I'd much rather spend time and effort looking for some cool toy to make me productive than actually doing the work I'm supposed to produce. As Abe Lincoln said, "If I have six hours to chop down a tree, I'll spend the first four sharpening the axe." I spend a lot of time sharpening axes, and looking for new blades. And handles, and carrying cases, and lubricants, and... Well, you get the picture.

fujitsuscansnap.jpgHere's the latest addition to my productivity arsenal -- the Fujitsu ScanSnap 5110 sheetfed scanner. I'm a proponent of the paperless office, despite my fervent belief we're unlikely to ever get there. And the fact that the first productivity tool I added to my office was tree-chewing 25ppm (page-per-minute) duplexing (both sides) laser printer.

Being able to scan paper documents quickly, cleanly, and accurately has been a goal of mine for years. Systems that could do this used to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. (I used to build such systems for book publishers.) Today you can do the same thing with a $400 scanner and a few hundred dollars worth of software. According to the specs the little ScanSnap will scan everything from magazine pages to contracts at the rate of 15 duplex pages per minute. That's impressive. A collection of product reviews at About.com show the real performance is even better.

Now, at last, I can stop using Fax machines. And flatbed scanners. Oh, I still have a little Microtek flatbed for scanning photos and such when needed. But most of my work is in capturing documents for digital storage. The ScanSnap should make that a snap.
