Tuesday, October 25, 2005Grim MilestoneWithin an hour of the annoucement of the 2,000th military death in Iraq there were 286 news stories listed on Yahoo! News using the phrase "grim milestone." This reminds me of the "gravitas" fiasco during the 2004 election cycle. How many times do you think the phrase "grim milestone" will be used on network news in the next 24 hours?It doesn't matter what side you're on or whose ox you're trying to gore, the attempt to manufacture memes has been made painfully obvious by the internet. Spewing code phrases trivializes the actual event and likely has the opposite of the intended effect. It just doesn't work anymore.
