Design Outsourcing May Be Big--Think India.

Just as Daniel Pink's A Whole New Mind was making us comfortable that design and creative skills were our protection against globalization, along comes Bruce Nussbaum in BusinessWeek with this on design firms in India. Guess the right-brain revolution isn't gonna be televised.

Design outsourcing may be big--think India.

Design outsourcing is probably one of the big things to happen over the horizon. U.S. corporations might want to take a look at a number of Indian design consultancies that appear to do great work. India's National Institute of Design graduates hundreds of highly trained designers a year. India has a vast manufacturing infrastructure in place--something US and European and Japanese companies are discovering. And design firms such as Elephant Design and Lopez do good work. Outsourcing design to India is going to be big.

Keyword Research Aids Business Bloggers

If you’re a business blogger – someone who blogs for the purposes of building credibility or gaining exposure for your business – you probably think understanding keywords is important to your success. But you also likely think it’s just one more arcane, techno-geek thing you don’t have time to understand.

Jay Stockwell of KeywordWorkshop.com has created two great resources for helping you get a grip on this inscrutable area of the web. First is his weblog. The second is his outstanding Keyword Research Tools Report.

I’ve read lots of research reports and am often disappointed. Not this time. Jay’s introduction and overview of keyword research was excellent, providing an understanding of what keywords are, how they work, what types of tools are available, and how they’re best used. Then he offers a review of more than 20 paid research tools. He does a really good job at this, explaining the various analytics, advantages, and weaknesses of each. Just reading through it will give you a great foundation for thinking about keywords and how they apply to your business.

For better or worse, keywords are the currency of the commercial internet. For them to be of any real use you have to have great material on your site – stuff that will inform your audience and give them a reason to want more. But once you have that you need every advantage to get noticed above the noise. Understanding keyword research may be one more tool you can put in your arsenal to beat the competition.

Why Did NYTimes Cut Jobs

Speech writer Jane Genova examines causes for the recent shrinkage at the paper of record. That is what the Times calls itself, yes? I dunno. I never even bother to click NYT links anymore. I know I can't get to them if it's been more than a few days, and it hardly seems worth the effort. It's just not that relevant anymore. But that's just me. Jane says there are other reasons:

Civilized society had to quake on Tuesday when THE NEW YORK TIMES announced it was cutting 500 jobs.

Jane has some interesting work on her blog. Check out her perspective on whether or not CEOs should blog (says it's irrelevant) and why narcissism is being weeded out of the blogosphere (a very good thing.)
