BlogJet 1.6 Released

New version of BlogJet is out. I've been using BlogJet 1.5 for about a year with no problems at all. There are a number of helpful new features. More after I've upgraded and tried it out.
I'm excited to announce the new release of BlogJet 1.6 "Lime".

Though it's a minor version number update, in fact it can be considered as a major update, since it have *lots* of new features. But it's FREE for registered users.

BlogJet now smoothly integrates with *Flickr* (photo-sharing service) to give you even better photo sharing capabilities. It now has the *Auto Replace* feature that saves your time, *group posting* feature to post to many blogs with as little as two clicks, and a lot of other improvements and bug fixes.

Safer Browsing

I’ve been using the three pieces of software below since I read Gregor’s post a few days ago. While I don’t disable Flash or Java, I have done the other things he lists. Installing NoScript, TargetKiller, and the hosts file has speeded my surfing and caused no noticeable side effects. Recommended additions to the anti-virus/anti-spyware arsenal..

safer browsing

here is what i am currently using to make browsing safer and less annoying:
  • Use Firefox (duh)
  • Don't install the Flash plugin
  • Turn off "Allow sites to set cookies" and keep a small whitelist
  • Use NoScript to only allow javascript on a small number of sites
  • Install this hosts file to remove most advertising
  • Use TargetKiller to get rid of pages opening up in new windows
  • Disable Java
It's amazing how much faster and pleasant the web becomes if you take the garbage out..

Bot Blight

I’ve been playing with a public wiki for a while, just to see how it works. Mostly, it’s a spammer magnet and, as such, has caused me to spend more time than I care with my server logs figuring out where they came from and blocking their access. But in the process I’ve found all sorts of bots scouring every page, using my bandwidth for no good return. In the past several months since I launched the project I’ve seen at least a couple of dozen small-time, unknown bots flailing away at my pages. I’m with Gregor – time to shut them down.
bot blight

i went ahead and blocked most crawlers in my robots.txt. there are too many of them, and for most, my ROI is negative anyway. if you had any doubts how far search still has to go, or how many moronic copycat companies there are in this space, spend some time with your log files.

Skype 1.4.0.84 Offers Improved Performance and Stability

The latest Skype version, 1.4.0.84, appears to have addressed several performance and stability issues. I've only just installed it this weekend on both my desktop PC and my ThinkPad, so experience is limited, but the annoying system lockups and 100% CPU usage while doing nothing in particular seem to be gone.

For some reason, I'm still amazed when tech support tells me repeatedly that they've never heard of my problem, never seen it before, have no idea why it happens, and are absolutely certain it has to do with software on my machine. Then all the problems magically disappear when they do some upgrade. Fascinating, that.

Anyway, I'll be turning Skype back on for a while to see how it holds up under use.
